An Introduction To Golf For The Adult Beginner - by Matt Canham

Every day more and more people are taking it up for the first time. I was once a beginning golfer myself and I remember the frustrations of learning the swing and playing well. And that was with a Golf Pro Father.

There are a lot of books and other information products available for established golfers, but not a lot for adults who are brand new to the game. Amongst all the tour talk, long drives and 400cc drivers, it seems beginners are left out.

Golf is a great game providing a lifetime of enjoyment and when you finally achieve a certain level of proficiency, a whole new element of the game appears, ensuring there is always a challenge.

Many schools offer an introductory 4 hour class - usually for around $320 - on the basics of golf, but you are better off to work on those yourself, then pay for lessons when you are comfortable with the basic knowledge. You won't be effective until you have mastered at least the basics, so by doing it at home, by yourself can remove much of the embarrassment that is often felt by...

Jasper Park Lodge, Alberta

Paris short stay accommodations - Paris short stay accommodations - studio flats suitable to large houses for 6 or more. English speaking.

Jasper Park Lodge Golf a highlight of Canadian golf - Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club was built by Stanley Thompson in 1924 and it was opened in the summer of 1925. The course, along with Jasper Park Lodge is located on Lac Beauvert in beautiful Jasper Park National Park in Alberta.

Jasper Park Lodge

Jasper Park is the largest national park in Canada, and is located about 250 miles west of Edmonton.

In the summer of 1924 Thompson used 200 men along with 50 teams of horses to clear the land, and move hundreds of large boulders to build the course. Many of the holes are aligned to provide breathtaking views of surrounding mountain peaks. There are other subtle design features throughout the course too, such as the way the mounding echoes the distant mountain ridges, and the way many bunkers were made to look like local snow formations.

Jasper Park Lodge

JPL has been praised by golfers and golf architects alike as one of the most unique "must play" courses in the world. In a very informative overview of the course one author says, "Its world ranking of number 36 according to the 1939 article found by Tom MacWood is justified to this day, thanks to its setting which has never been tainted and the superb work of Thompson which has been lovingly preserved and restored."

Course details:
Year opened: 1925
Architect: Stanley Thompson
Course length: par 71, 6663 yards, slope 124
Green Fees (2007): to may 18 - $110; Summer - $200, after 3 - $120, after 5 - $90

History of Rosedale Area of Toronto

Feb 20, 2007 - Canada Travel Web >>>

The History Of The Rosedale Neighbourhood In Toronto - by Rob Parker
The wealthiest neighbourhood in Toronto came into being in 1824, when William Botsford Jarvis bought a portion of a 200 acre land grant made to Captain George Playter for his role in supporting King George in the American Revolution. Jarvis was the sheriff of the home district, and was a staunch supporter of the crown, continuing the family tradition passed on by his father, who like Playter had fought for the Crown during the American Revolution.

Jarvis moved to the property with his wife Mary. After their house was completed, Mary named the residence Rosedale because of the many roses that grew in the area. The couple would have five children, and Rosedale itself was one of the centres of concentration for William Lyon MacKenzie’s rebellion. MacKenzie and Jarvis had much ill will towards each other, and MacKenzie had stated one of the purposes of his march was to burn Rosedale to the ground. This was averted when a colonel in the ill fated rebellion said he would not fight women and children. Jarvis would later hang this colonel.

Legend has it that the famously meandering streets of Rosedale were patterned after the tracks Mary Jarvis made on her many rides throughout the property. Mary Jarvis died in 1852, and William lived on over a decade after her death until 1864. Although their names are synonymous with the history of the community, theirs was actually the second house built in the area, the first being built on the Don River in 1818...

The region gets an average of about 10 inches of rainfall. So we're talking dusty cowboy country here. The course is built in the valley of the Old Man River in what is known as Paradise Canyon. The banks of the river reach 100 feet in some places, and the golf course has used the landscape to very dramatic effect.

Planning A Golf Trip to Southern Alberta

Feb 11, 2007 - Linknet Golf >>>

Well, here we are in the deepest part of February '07, and I'm thinking about golf. We're trying to decide whether to head over to Scotland again for a golf holiday this summer, spend a week in Cape Breton at Highlands Links, or make the trek to Alberta to do a little foothills golf.

Alberta has the upper hand at the moment. Judy spent a few years in southern Alberta near the little town of Brocket so if it's Alberta we choose, we'll likely be heading to the southwest corner of the province. That would be south and west of Calgary.

But what about golf in that area of the province? Typically what I do is look for courses that cost less than $100/round, offer afternoon or twilight rates that are about half that, and are therefore usually off the beaten track. That way we stay well away from the crowds and can golf just about every day if we want -- often at some pretty remarkable places.

Win with Linknet Golf - New Contests Every Week.

That leaves out Banff Springs ($200), but includes some courses in the Canmore, Kananaskis and locations south and west of Calgary such as Bragg Creek and De Winton. That would be the first leg of our trip.

The second would take us further south to Lethbridge, Fort Macleod and Waterton Lakes National Park. I'll be researching possible golf courses in that area very soon.

Visit Ontario's Beautiful and Historic Algonquin Park

Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario has a special place in the hearts of virtually all Ontarions and many millions of Canadians.

Algonquin map

The park is set in an area of the province accessible from Toronto in the south and Ottawa to the east. Provincial highway #60 runs through the south end of the park and is the main entrance and exit point for park visitors.

The East Gate is located just west of the town of Whitney. The West Gate is located just east of the town of Dwight. Many other access points run off highway #17 which runs along the north side of the park.

Algonquin's 7,725 square kilometres of forests, lakes, and rivers have acted as a refuge from modern development for more than 100 years.

Algonquin Park was established in 1893, during the logging boom that was then taking place in northern Ontairo. The park was created to establish a wildlife sanctuary, and to protect the headwaters of the five major rivers that flow out of the Algonquin Highlands. It was for this reason that agriculture was not allowed in the park.

Eventually Algonquin Park was "discovered", by adventurous fishermen, then by Tom Thomson and The Group of Seven. Eventually thousands of visitors would come to the Park every summer by train and stay in one of Algonquin's several hotels.

Over the decades Algonquin Park has touched millions of people and earned worldwide fame. It has been featured in more than 40 books and numerous videos and travelogues. Indeed, Algonquin Park has become the most important place in Canada for biological and environmental research.

Algonquin Provincial Park holds a very important place for all Canadians who cherish our cultural heritage and unique envinromental sensitivity.

With golf course development reaching the point of saturation in North America and many of the traditional golfing countries, investors and golf course developers are looking to "underdeveloped" countries in Europe and Asia for greener pastures.

Bulgaria is just such a country. On the verge of entry into the EU, Bulgaria's development promises to be rapid and significant in the very near future. And that goes for the development of the infrastructure required for extensive travel - airports, highways, hotels, tourist destinations, and golf courses.

Currently there are only two golf courses listed on GolfEurope.com:

Ihtiman Golf Course
Ihtiman Golf Club - the original Bulgarian golf course. Ihtiman Golf Course is rated by the rating committee of USGA. 18 holes, 6345 yards, rating is 71.3 and slope 131 from the back tees.

null

Sliven golf course was opened on May 24th, 2004. It is a par 71, 6563 yards. It features spectacular views to the Balkan mountain.

The strategy of the Bulgarian Golf Federation is to gradually build more golf courses throughout Bulgaria. Golf courses in Razgrad, Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv and Sofia are in the planning stages.

Other developers are also planning golf course developments as part of larger tourist and accommodation projects.

Toronto Real Estate sales remain strong in October - Despite bad news coming out of last year's hot markets in the U.S., Toronto real estate sales in October are on pace with October 2005.

According to the Toronto Real Estate Baord, there were 3,007 sales reported to mid-October, on par with the 3,012 sales reported during the same period in 2005.

Some regions of the city saw significant increases, due mainly to changes in market demand for certain types of properties. The hottest spots were Northeast Scarborough (up 24%), Rexdale in the west end (up 59%), and the downtown core (up 43%.) These sales increases were driven by condominium sales.

In Thornhill, north of the city, sales increase by 48% driven mostly by detached homes.

The average home price rose to $353,677, up six per cent over the
$335,208 recorded to the middle of September, and 3% higher than the $341,865 recorded during the first part of October last year.

Inventory stands at 25,839 listings, up two per cent over mid-September.
And the average number of days on the market for a home is 35.

Ottawa - Home of the Canadian Parliament Buildings

The parliament buildings in Ottawa were originally designed as the legislature for the Canadas, and were already under construction by the time of Confederation in 1867. The current Parliament Buildings were built between 1865 and 1927. The West Block was built in 1865 and the East Block in two stages in 1867 and 1910. The Library of Parliament was opened in 1876, and the original Centre Block completed in 1878. The Legislature of the Province of Canada met for the first time in the new building on 8 June 1866, and the new Parliament of the Dominion of Canada began its first session there on November 6, 1867.

The Centre Block as it appeared around 1870. The original structure was designed by Thomas Fuller and Chilion Jones. It was in the Gothic Revival style that was popular at the time. The British Palace of Westminster had recently been rebuilt in this style, and the choice of a gothic rather than an American inspired neoclassical design, was a symbol of Canada's continued links to Britain. The building was erected in the High Victorian Gothic style. By this time the desire to faithfully imitate medieval designs had faded, and architects were freely remixing Gothic elements in new and innovative manners. Thus the tower comes from German architecture, the roofs from French, and the library distinctly English.

In spring of 2006, major inside and outside renovations of the Library of Parliament were completed. The renovations, which began in 2002, are the first ones since repairs were made in 1952-1956 after a small fire in the dome attic. The reading room of the library is once again open to the public and is considered, by some, to be the most beautiful room in Canada.

Ottawa's Rideau Canal

The Rideau Canal was completed in 1832 and connects Ottawa on the Ottawa River with Kingston, Ontario which is on Lake Ontario near the source of the St. Lawrence River. The 202 kilometres (125 miles) of the Rideau Canal incorporate sections of the Rideau River and the Cataraqui River, as well as several lakes including the Lower, Upper and Big Rideau lakes. Of the total of 202 kilometers, only about 19 kilometres (12 miles) of the route is man made. But those 19 kilometers were extremely difficult to construct back in the early 1800s.

When it was constructed the Rideau Canal was intended to provide an alternative route from the settlements in Upper Canada (Ontario) to those in Lower Canada (Quebec) -- essentially between Toronto and Montreal.

At the time it was felt an alternative route was needed because there had been hostility between the U.S. and British Canada which came to a boil in 1812. It turned out, however, that American expansionism waned after the War of 1812 and the two countries were content to coexist peacefully.

For a time in the 1800s the canal was commercially important, but as with many waterways of the era, the Rideau could not compete with newly constructed railways. Usage of the canal for commercial purposes gradually dwindled to virtually zero.

These days only pleasure craft make use of the Rideau Canal. Boat tours of the canal are offered in the city of Ottawa and recreational boaters can make use of it to travel between Ottawa and Kingston with ease. The original construction, supervised by Lieutenant-Colonel John By of the Royal Engineers still remains virtually intact today. There are a total of 47 locks at 24 stations along the Canal. Most of the locks are still hand-operated.
